Strong community support and intergovernmental cooperation has provided Township residents with a recreational, multi-purpose trail recreational trail system extending 5.5 miles from West Park to East Park. This linear trail system was established on the abandoned railroad corridor running between Charlevoix and Petoskey. Nationally recognized as a Community Millennium Trail, this federal designation qualifies the Wheelway for federal funding opportunities. This designation also recognizes the significance of the pathway in connecting people to their land, their history, and their culture. The Petoskey Cycle Club initially constructed the trail in 1897 and it was believed the economic benefits of this system would keep summer visitors in the Petoskey area. The trail proved both a recreational and economic benefit for people then, as it has at present. The trail system is designed to provide year-round recreational activities including in-line skating, bicycling, running/walking, and cross-country skiing. The City of Petoskey Department of Parks and Recreation maintains the trail. Future planning activities include connecting this 5.5 segment with Charlevoix and Petoskey. When the Charlevoix to Petoskey segment is completed, the local trail will link with a regional trail system connecting the counties of Charlevoix (City of Charlevoix), Emmet (Petoskey, Alanson, Harbor Springs, Pellston, Mackinaw City), Cheboygan (Cheboygan, Indian River, Topinabee, Wolverine), Otsego (Vanderbilt, Gaylord), and Presque Isle (Onaway, Hawks).
