APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED for Farmland and Open Space Preservation Purchase of Development Right (PDR) Program

PDR programs help preserve farmland, natural areas, scenic views and open spaces while allowing property owners to receive income from their land without selling it for intensive development.

In the Resort Township PDR program, an interested land owner negotiates with the township and can voluntarily sell, to the Township, all or possibly part of the development rights of the property. The landowner retains full ownership of the property, but the negotiated rights to further develop the property is retired and a conservation easement is placed on the land and recorded with the title. The landowner can continue to use their land for the purposes specified in the negotiated conservation easement and allowed by the Zoning Ordinance, such as farming, timber, hunting or a residence. Property taxes are often reduced when a conservation easement is recorded. If the land is sold or inherited, the conservation easement remains with the property.

If you are interested in applying, or for more information, please call the Township Hall at 347-7915, email hollyangileri@resorttownship.org, or contact the Little Traverse Conservancy at 231.347.0991 (either Catlin Donnelly, Director of Land Protection, caitlin@landtrust.org or Joe Graham, Land Protection Specialist, joe@landtrust.org).

The application period for this cycle is open now through January 15, 2022.
